When people express their gratitude & all things good in their lives people never mention good health. We are grateful for wealth, relationships, material things, friends & family but never for good health.
It took me a near death experience to appreciate good health. The last two years were a roller coaster ride but mostly going uphill in terms of health. We take our health for granted and act as if its our right to be healthy but its actually our responsibility to stay healthy or live healthy.
Its only when you're too ill to do anything to appreciate health. Having to change your movement or walk because walking is just too painful a task. You miss riding a bicycle or jogging & those are some of the things one takes for granted. I never really understood why people always say "mind, body & soul" as if they're intertwined but they actually are. When your body is not functioning well neither does the mind. You have to pick up yourself mentally before you can start healing your body. Imagine what it feels like when doctors tell you about a colostomy bag & give u a day to think about it & u only realise what it is after they've put it in & by this time its too late to change your mind. The only consolation prize is that this will help u in the long run. Its an emotional uphill and as well as taxing on your soul but it doesn't do what it is supposed to do.
What is more saddening than an operation gone wrong and a colostomy bag is when your surgeon tells you there's nothing more he can do for you. He can't fix an operation that collapsed and that just won't heal. When doctors can't & I mean can't make a diagnosis. What does one do? Its all too much right but hey doctors are human too right. Then the nail in the coffin is when there's no antibiotic or surgery in the world that will help your situation. What do u do then? Its all confusing and antidepressants are just not working.
The only solace one has at this stage is a family physician who just won't give up & is trying all sorts of things to help the situation and is adamant in getting to the bottom of this & genuinely wants to help. To be honest u wouldn't have made it this far without her. Does one roll over and die or revive that fighting spirit? Even though bending over to tie shoe laces is mission impossible. People will say to u there's a light at the end of the tunnel and u just wish that light was a train coming to run u over & put u out of your misery.
When you cannot do anything then you'll understand what people mean when they say " the best things in life are free". What I mean is don't take your health for granted. Do what u have to do to stay healthy. Take good care of yourself & be grateful for all the simple things you can do. Like being able to turn in bed without crying in agony. Being able to climb in & out of a car without assistance or tears rolling down your face. When you've overdosed on pain meds so much that they no longer serve the purpose. What does one do when pain actually paralysis u. When u have a million questions that nobody has answers to.
You dream about doing minor things like crossing your legs when sitting, or being able to lean forward to reach for the remote control. These are actions we never think about before executing them but when you're in pain they become things u dream about doing. Taking a bath becomes an unpleasant & unbearable but necessary task.
The only thing one resorts to is shutting everyone out & putting up walls. Always having a straight & expressionless face so people won't ask u what's wrong.
At times u have conversations with your body, asking that particular body part when its going to heal, when will the flesh stop eating away at itself, when will this paralysing pain stop. The outcome of this is more pain & more agony and no answers. The only thing u can do is ask why me,what did I do, was I a serial killer in my previous life? What? These things don't just happen for no reason right? Actually they do.
The cherry on top is when u make a deal with God to end the misery you're going through in exchange for living a better life dedicated to him. When u pray so much so u end up not knowing what to say in your prayers.
Health is important and should never be taken for granted cos u'll never know when stretching your legs will feel like you've just been run over by a car but the worst feeling is when your child hugs u & that causes u immense pain cos they've squeezed u too tight.
Never take your body's good health for granted.
